According to specialists, digitalization of the maritime industry will become a key factor of an increased productivity of this industry. Digital solutions are supposed to help with the production of ships, fleet management and their main objective is to integrate the entire supply logistics.
“Digital transformation will change the shipping industry for ever and pave the way for new business models. Detailed information on both the load and route received in real time as well as data concerning operation and condition of a ship and its components will make future supply chains easier to operate and more effective”, emphasizes Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO Maritime at DNV GL and Vice-Chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Additionally, due to the development and spread of so called cloud computing, computing power will not only change the manner of data management, but also the manner of designing and building ships.
Apart from increase in efficiency, digitalization is supposed to improve safety on board. A new level of support for decision-making will ensure better control over human resources and systems, thus decreasing the number of incidents. All the more so that digital tools – as Kjersti Kleven, Member of the Management Board of Norwegian shipyard group Kleven Maritime AS and CEO of SEA Europe says – are already more common in maritime economy, including shipbuilding. Although 2-3 years ago such solutions were deemed science-fiction, currently they are becoming natural work environment. Kjersti Kleven also emphasized i.a. an ever broader application of 3D printing and the opportunities of using this technology in production.
“Shipbuilding is already able to take advantage of such enormous development in robotics industry. Moreover, in the era of digitalization investments in research and development
are of the utmost importance to the industry”, Kleven concluded.
Wayne Jones, Member of the Management Board of MAN Diesel & Turbo, on the other hand, sees the benefits of digitalization in simplification and larger transparency, e.g. by means of collecting all data necessary to operate supply chain for shipbuilding on a common platform for the entire developing industry.
However, it is necessary to protect data collected on digital platforms or in clouds. Consequently, cybersecurity is the subject matter of a common project carried out by classification societies belonging to the IACS.
Digital solutions in the maritime economy are to be one of the topics of the Maritime Economy Forum Gdynia 2018.

The personal data provided by you will be made available to the following recipients: entities authorized under generally applicable laws, entities to whom the Controller entrusted the processing of personal data (in particular entities providing IT services, accounting offices, couriers) and the Municipality of Gdynia.
7. We inform you that we use services and technologies offered by such entities as: Facebook, LinkedIn, Google, which are based in the United States. In the light of GDPR, they shall be treated as third countries for which it shall be demonstrated that an adequate level of protection is provided or that adequate safeguards are in place.
8. You have the right to access the content of your data and the right to rectification, deletion, restriction of processing, the right to transfer data and the right to object. If the Controller processes data only on the basis of your consent, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of the processing carried out on the basis of your consent prior to its withdrawal. 9. You have the right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority if you believe that the processing of personal data relating to you is in breach of the provisions of GDPR.
