The Central Port in Gdańsk and the External Port in Gdynia are flagship investments of the managements of ports in Tricity. Both are to be finished by 2030. What functions are they supposed to serve and what benefits are they to bring?
“The External Port, let us call it universal, may be a typical container terminal, which is equipped with loading and storage facilities and access to modern land infrastructure. New port wharves will be able to serve passenger ships too,” explains Adam Meller, President of the Management Board of the Port of Gdynia Authority. “We are aware of the fact that going to see is a historical moment for the Port in Gdynia and an opportunity to boost its competitive advantage.”
The External Port is a “to be or not to be” for the Port in Gdynia which is struggling with a huge problem of lack of space for further development of its core activities. Expanding to sea is not only a chance of dynamic development, it is also a chance of maintaining its competitive capacity as well as high position on the market of port services in the Baltic Sea Region.
Thus, the initial concept assumes a deepwater port exceeding the existing wave breaker built on artificial ground on the basis of the existing Silesian and Swedish wharves. An initial feasibility study and a multivariant conceptual study, taking into account various functions of the investment, will be carried out in the nearest future. Once such studies have been carried out, the ZPMG will take a decision concerning both the form and scope of construction.
“The construction of the External Port will result in a considerable increase in transshipment, which will obviously translate into financial results of the company and an opportunity for further investments,” adds Piotr Nowak, Vice President of the Port in Gdynia Authority.
The Central Port in Gdańsk, in tun, is an investment, which in the opinion of the Port of Gdańsk Authorities, is to make this port a port of the first choice for many other markets.
“The economy is ruthless: ever larger units which carry more goods are being constructed. We need to have attractive deepwater infrastructure, thanks to which the Port in Gdańsk will be a port of the first choice for many markets,” explains Łukasz Greinke, President of the Port of Gdańsk Authority.
According to analyses, economic forecasts by 2030 are extremely promising, thus a decision to build is necessary due to an increase in transshipment predicted for the upcoming years. The investment is to be carried out between the opening of the port canal and Naftoport. As a target, there will be a few terminals for various purposes, i.a. mass, general cargo, passenger or RO-RO, located on the area of approx. 50 hectares. The investment is to be conducted as a public private partnership and projects gradual construction of terminals depending on the needs of private operators.
In May 2018, a consortium of 2 companies – Projmors Biuro Budownictwa Morskiego and Mosty Gdańsk – was selected, which will prepare the concept of a new port. The concept is to include i.a. analysis of demand for maritime transport of goods and passengers, both for Poland and Europe and the entire world, as well as forecasts of long-term changes in demand for such transport by 2050. The contractor will have
10 months to complete this task.
One of the panels of the Maritime Economy Forum Gdynia 2018 will be dedicated to seaports.
