In order to meet contemporary challenges faced by the maritime industry, east coast ports have begun to invest in innovative transport, transshipment and environmental protection technologies.
In the case of Port of Gdynia, the most important actions in this field in the coming years will include automation of port processes, including transshipment ones, as well as of mooring ships at quays. This is aimed at improving the effectiveness of port and vessel traffic and user safety. As representatives of the Management Board of Port of Gdynia point out, contemporary sea ports striving to increase their competitiveness must aspire to full digitalization of processes related to handling cargo, passengers and modes of transportation. Therefore, it will be necessary to implement intelligent transport solutions, for instance associated with optimizing vehicle traffic on the port premises, and also to launch the Port Community System which will connect the port and marine traffic participants in order to ensure not only optimization of cargo handling processes, but also optimization of freight transport in land and sea logistics chains.
On the other hand, environmental concerns induce the port in Gdynia to undertake activities (including investing ones) serving to prepare the port to handle means of transport powered by ecological fuels such as LNG or hydrogen, and to provide installations enabling to supply vessels with electricity from port quays. Solutions in this field will also regard environmentally friendly manners of operating port facilities and cargo handling equipment. Another innovative solution is the use of drones to ensure safety of port operations and to monitor the state of the environment. On the port premises, a new comprehensive system, yetiSense, created by the company SeaData, was launched to monitor air pollutant emissions. All these solutions qualify as technological innovations and, apart from adjusting services offered by the port to customers’ expectations, they are to increase the port’s social responsibility and thus help take care of the urban environment.
As regards Port of Gdańsk, aiming at improving quality and facilitating work - which translates into higher transshipment capacity and environmental protection - it supports innovative projects related to the maritime industry. Its innovative activities take mainly the form of a cooperation between the Management Board of Port of Gdańsk with startups as part of accelerator programmes such as ScaleUp or Poland Prize. These competitions allow young companies to present their projects and winning startups have an opportunity to realise their ideas for Port of Gdańsk.
In cooperation with young scientists and Pomeranian universities, the port has already implemented some pilot projects, among which the most interesting ones regard for instance a sensor system to measure dust and pollutant emissions, created by the startup SeaData (a similar system operates in Port of Gdynia), and the Intelligent Traffic Management System (developed by the startup Parkanizer). The sensor system enables to control and analyse air pollutants emitted on the port premisses and signalise potential exceedance of air quality limits. And the ITMS prototype is to allow vehicle recognition, access control and traffic management on the premises of port terminals and such. This is a useful IT and technical system enabling to manage notification of vehicles in an effective manner.
